Job search 2010 -- prove it!

As devastating as this recession has been for the laid-off and unemployed, it has also been a gut wrenching experience for many small business owners (recruiters) including the author. American entrepreneurs have learned some hard lessons that won't be forgotten. When I say the entire American business landscape has changed, it's because small business is not actually small. Just have a look at these numbers:… Continue

Employers to go jobboard-free?

An HR blogger said something interesting in a recent job boards-are-dying type post: "We will be job board free in 2 years." In a follow-up post to explain how this would occur, this anonymous blogger says (problem areas in red):
"When you need something, you go to Google, so why not use it to find a job? Simply enter your criteria, say sales

Job search 2010 -- small is in

We've just been through a brutal economic storm. If you were sheltered, great - good for you. But pay attention anyway, because this storm wreaked havoc on many of the people you'll meet in the next stages of your career. You are going to meet and work with a lot of people who've been burned. So many that the American business landscape is never going to look the same again. At the height of the crisis, large companies fired thousands of employees to preserve profits. In many cases, they… Continue

InternetRecruiting.us reborn as OnlineRecruitingNews.com

A year ago, I launched InternetRecruiting.us as a job board directory and invited job boards to post news there. It was an interesting experiment but didn't really grab me. So, I'm remaking the website with a new purpose and a new domain. So online recruiting news.com will be a coop of 50 dues paying job boards who want to increase their visibility. Whether or not you want to become a coop member, you will still be welcome to mai… Continue

How many jobs?

In 1997 when I launched my first job board, you could put a handful of jobs online, call yourself a job board and attract attention. A lot of things were easier back then - Goto.com traffic cost just pennies and eventually when Google AdWords surfaced, it was dirt cheap also. No longer. As monster.com and careerbuilder.com grew, important things began to change. The price of cost per click advertising rose quickly and the shine came off a niche job board if it did not overwhelmingly dominate it… Continue

are you doing reciprocal links?

I spend the first 45 minutes of every day reading blogs and forum. It's healthy to read lots of different viewpoints and have a good picture of what's happening around us. But, it's also easy to learn the wrong things from the "experts". Years ago (7 yrs?), there seem to be a consensus that reciprocal links no longer worked. As a result, we abandoned the practice. The real lesson we should have learned was this -- reciprocal links became less effective, but so what? They were still a valuable t… Continue

Life in the slow lane

Today is the day we're announcing JustJobs.com and it's precisely three and a half years after the idea was conceived and planning started. That sounds slightly absurd to me but then again, this is a big complex project. There were delays and missteps of all kinds - fortunately, the ones we know about have been ironed out. We have had time right? In three and half years, the market could have moved on right past us... that's part of the risk of bootstrapping. We started this project back when t… Continue

just updated top 100 jobsite niches for 2009

this top 100 job site niches report takes a lot of time but it's worthwhile for me as I get to see how our industry is changing from year to year... * this is the first year that I can number the list 1 to 100 (which I haven't published yet) because of changes in the Google Keyword suggestion tool. * I stopped listing sites that require registration this year. * a few more associations sites popped up this time * a few sites… Continue

In the eye of the hurricane

In December, I wrote about the hurricane that would hit the job board industry. Well, the hurricane landed and it's tearing a path of destruction through the recruiting business. When hurricanes land, there is a lot of hyperactivity when everyone is looking for shelter. We get a flood of partnership proposals that only benefit the parties proposing them and a lot of people want to talk to "find synergies". Voicemail from sales reps pick up as well... many seem to think that perhaps the 25th call… Continue

bad karma on twitter for entrepreneurs

At first, I thought Twitter was foolish, then, I tried it and became enamored. About six months later, I lost all respect for Twitter. A few months more, and I can finally see its strengths and weaknesses in balance. The strengths are pretty easy - meet and interact with new people that interest you, market yourself, get to know your "friends" better, know what's going on right now and eavesdrop on conversations you'd never be privileged to hear in any other setting. What's the downside? Here… Continue

Google SERP changes

As many job board people know, big changes have been occurring in the Google search results over the past couple of months. Yesterday Google announced improved search refinements - "Starting today, we're deploying a new technology that can better understand associations and concepts related to your search, and one of its first applications lets us offer you even more useful related searches (the terms found at the bottom, and sometimes at the top, of the search results page)."… Continue

Congratulations to Monster.com

Congratulations to Monster.com -- the site redesign launched a couple days ago is the first move in the right direction that I can remember in 10 years (aside from some good tv ads 5 years ago). I don't typically write about the big three job boards, mostly because I'm not a bash… Continue

Job board outlook 2009 - the hurricane

the obvious stuff: • Employers are scaling back their use of job boards. They aren’t hiring. • Lots of HR managers will lose their jobs. But, sometimes that helps down the road when they are rehired in new companies, we gain a new customer. • Many executive recruiters will throw in the towel and take jobs in less lucrative and less cyclical industries. the rest of my job board forecast is here. Continue

Try-everything competition among job boards?

If you've been reading my blog for a while, you know that competition is one of my obsessions... so, I couldn't pass up talking about Jason Calacanis' ideas on the future of the startup. I really like two things Jason says - first he calls this the 'try everything' era and truly I believe in hyperactivity as a new requirement for success on the Internet. It is happening as we speak in the job board industry... Second, he calls longevity a type of innov… Continue
